Entry for January 14, 2007
From what I heard and read about 70s Bistro, it is the center of rock n roll in Quezon City. I used to go to BBM in Manila, the center of folk rock in that area. Someday, I would like to get to 70s Bistro to get a taste of live rock n roll. Not that I haven't had a taste before. I had seen some. Once in a while, me and my friends also jam to some rock n roll pieces. We are not so seroius about it, but when we play, we can show that we can also rock decently. I hope the rock n rollers do not destroy the music that we love to listen to. They may have been rocking for a long time, but I hope they only get better. Some say that rock n roll had died more than thirty years ago, I say that it has been made to live by others who refused to believe that the "music" had died. There may have been no rock revolutionaries in the last thirty years, but it is enough that the music has been kept alive through lp/s, cds, live performances and the never ending resurgence of bands and single artist/s who rock for music sake. I believe that rock n roll is not a nostaligic trip, but a re-discovery of treasure of music and keeping it alive. We have to keep on going, at the same time we pay respect to our music heroes. Thanks and more power to 70s Bistro. --Deo Sunday January 14, 2007 2007-01-19 08:17:06 GMT

While I admire some people's romanticism about "Pinoy Rock", I always think that music is something that is universal. Although there used to be American Folk Blues, British Pop, and the like, times have passed and the music which used to be identified to some has ceased to be so in the present time. This is because the music has evolved and has been popularized by different artists. The purpose of identifying music in relation to a race or color of skin can simply be considered for historical purposes, if not for marketing. Popular music is the same as the other rock and roll music which has been popularized. In the same way, Pinoy Rock can be considered as popular music in the context of its popularity. Probably, the reason why Pinoy Rock has remained to be an alternative music among others is because they think the music is different. It is not. It is simply a music which is treated with a different style making it a fine piece of music. That is its reason for its impact and endurance. For instance, "Himig Natin" as popularized by Juan dela Cruz was recorded with three chords. It gets complicated after the verses with the combination of acoustic and lead guitars and sweeping of drums. It is a fine piece, and it is popular music (and probably, one of the best singles ever written in the history of Pinoy Pop). And, the recording sounds good. Although rock n roll in this country is not played in wide audience, the same remains popular among music enthusiasts and fans. It is in the mainstream, the way other pop artists are into. Contrary to a historical analysis that Pinoy Rock is an alternative music, it is as popular as the rest. It is just that some artists have not yet attained the level which others have, or probably may no longer reach a high level of popularity due to some circumstances. The fact that rock n roll sells in this country contradicts the viewpoint that it is alternative. And to be tagged as a sell-out is simply a jealousy among people who want to chain artists to what they like. More than forty years ago, Bob Dylan was accused of such because some purists wanted him to stay as a folk artist. But rock n roll got into him. Forty years later, his "Like A Rolling Stone" has been voted as the greatest single of all time by the Rolling Stone Magazine. The same way that the Beatles were considered, almost all of the music critics are one in saying that "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is the greatest album of all time. In the local scene, some bands have also been tagged as such...and sadly, other remains to those who pulled them to stay and fortunately for the others, they explored and may have continually explored rock n roll stardom. And to explore does not mean an eternal exploration, it is enough that when the time came to rock one delivers. In the end, one may realize that rock n roll opens up rather than closes its doors to opportunities, whatever they may be. One rock n roll masterpiece is what one needs to be leveled with the others...great and popular, but, not alternative.

First time I went to 70's bistro was with a friend who wanted me to see a "kababayan" of his, a sorsoganon(if I spelled that right) named Chikoy Pura, the lead vocals for the band "The jerks". At the time, I did not know of the place, or the band, aside from random mentions by my friend and my brother. I remember stepping into the place for the first time, seeing the 70's mantra "where you can be who you are" and feeling like a giddy school girl seeing her crush. The set has not yet started so we went ahead and got a table right in front of the stage. All I was thinking at the moment was that, "hey, I need a beer", after a long day's work(very stressful by the way)the service was good, waiters friendly but not too uptight, giving that "garahe" feel of a drinking session. I was happy. Very Happy. A good place with good food and service and prices that are just right! what more could I ask for.... And then came THE JERKS! churning out sounds reminiscent of the days that I was being introduced to the beatles by my dad, when I went crazy over the brit punk era, with the original Jerks flavor added, it was pure music ambrosia! I was, F*ck yeah(pardon me french) this is the Sh*t!(again my apologies) and as I was just feelin my rebellion growin and now shoutin along the lyrics of bob dylan's "rolling stone", They played, "Rage!", It was so cool, words would not do justice to The Jerks stage performance. I became an instant fan. Over the next days, I now found myself going to the 70's website to get the gig scheds and going there, If time allows, for all the good local bands I liked. It was, at least to me, a very intimate and personal experience. It became a habit to go on fridays, when Sir Chikoy(as we so respectfully call him) and the rest of the jerks played. we became friends with the staff, being adressed as "tol" and not "sir" was sooooo cool. It felt like home. The bands (specially the jerks) became our friends and we gained so many others(Maam monette, jet,Kulet, biboy, etc...) and the best thing is, we were stripped down to who we were, inside, not the straight faced, 9-5 office drones that we were, but the real, unadulterated souls in the purest form, and we were okay. It is the place where you can be who you are. so to the one reading this, wheter you soothe out to brownman, or bang heads to kamikazee and pentavia, or just want to Rage!(props to sir chiks!) against the dying of the light, try 70's bistro, find out who you are and be who you are. there is no place better than here to do it. Why, heck, they encourage you the moment you walk into the door! Just pay the entrance fee please!! Peace and love everyone!
